Updates
Mycelium is new and changes fast. This diary covers what changed and why, newest first. Most changes come straight from players' feedback, so keep it coming: myceliumplay@gmail.com.
Online clicks feel instant
In online matches every click travels to the server and back before it takes effect, so that every player's game stays identical. Players far from the server could feel that delay. Now the target ring and the amount you sent appear the moment you click, and the server's answer takes over seamlessly.
Three new maps, flying spores and a sharper Mycotoxin
- Root Highways: old roots cross the map; growth races along them three times faster, but a root is a long line that is easy to cut.
- Heartwood: a nutrient-rich core behind a rock wall with four gates.
- Archipelago: islands in dark water. Spore across, grow 120 cells, and your spore takes root as a permanent second heart.
- Spore bursts now fly from your closest cell, so everyone sees them coming. A Mycotoxin cloud stops an enemy spore that lands in it, at a price: clouds now kill every cell inside, yours too.
- The map list in the menu scrolls, to make room for more maps.
Play again with the same friends
- Private rooms now stay open after a match: Back to room brings everyone into the same lobby, and the host keeps the host role.
- A cleaner screen: a compact panel at the bottom, the live ranking at the top right, and a small label next to your mouse showing exactly what a click will send.
A tutorial for new players
A two-minute guided match now teaches the basics one step at a time: growing, sending more, nutrients, supply lines, spores, attacking and absorbing. It is offered on your first visit and always available next to the Start button. The tutorial bot never attacks you, so nobody loses while reading. Mycotoxin's cooldown also went from 45 to 15 seconds.
Bigger moments, slower fights
- Colony names are written inside each colony, and bots draw from 64 fungus names.
- Counter-attacks clash with incoming attacks: 5,000 against 5,000 cancels out.
- End-of-game stats, a live ranking with arrows, and clear labels when a territory gets cut off.
- Taking healthy enemy land is now about 25% slower than expanding, so defenders have time to react, while cuts stay just as deadly.
- Pause in solo games, a smooth camera glide to your colony at the start, and more visible origins.
- Spore bursts got a 15-second cooldown.
Smoother online play
A clear Leave button in online lobbies, friendlier bots when real people play together, a camera that can look past the map's edges, and several bug fixes (including clicks that did nothing right after absorbing a colony).
Online multiplayer, abilities and sound
- Online multiplayer: private rooms with a four-letter code, and Quick play public matches with anyone online. Every player runs the same simulation; the server checks every move.
- Spore burst and Mycotoxin, with a right-click ring menu.
- Zoom and pan, feedback when you take a bonus, the Mycelium logo, and synthesized sound effects.
Day one: the first playable version
The first prototype: a fungus colony, a few bots, and the supply-line rule that makes cut-off land wither. Later that same day came the start menu with map styles and sizes, the spawn phase, nutrient soil and rotting logs, four bot difficulty levels and the reward for absorbing a colony.
